Yet such was the tag bestowed on Taiwanese rock quintet Mayday by the Washington Post. The five band members - Ashin (lead vocals), Monster (guitar), Stone (guitar), Masa (bass) and Ming (drums) - grew up together in Taiwan's capital, Taipei, and began by playing low-key gigs at a series of pubs and clubs before they were signed to Rock Records, the label of Jonathan Lee - "the godfather of Chinese popular music". That was in 1999. Awards, fame and the kind of devoted fans that make "One Directioners" look subdued have followed, but success outside of Asia remains elusive.
